CD: Comparing the Actors to the Characters

•September 18, 2008 • Leave a Comment

This is just comparing the actor’s physically to the character descriptions. I wont be doing every character, because that would take a crapload of time. So, here we go.

-Cullen Kids-

Bella Swan

“Instead, I was ivory-skinned, without even the excuse of blue eyes or red hair, despite the constant sunshine. I had always been slender, but soft somehow, obviously not an athlete; I didn’t have the necessary hand-eye cordination to play sports without humiliating myself — and harming both myself and anyone else who stood too close.”
-Twilight. US Paperback. Pg. 10. Chapter One, First Sight

On a totally unrelated note, I noticed that Stephenie uses — a lot. Anyway, I think Kristen looks like Bella should. She’s pretty and in some pictures, my default, gorgeous. She’s pale, she’s a brunette. I have no problems at all with her look. I think she will look perfect in the movie. Check out this interesting excerpt from the IMDB Trivia:
Kristen Stewart has naturally green eyes. She wears brown contacts for filming because Bella is supposed to have brown eyes.

I just think that is so cool. It always pissed me off that you could clearly see Dan Radcliffle’s blue eyes, when Harry very obviously has green (they only mention it about a thousand times each book). I just love that they’re keeping that continuity, even though it’s not the big a deal. Props to you, Kristen!!

Twilight, Chapter One- First Sight

Initial Reaction: Not the most exciting chapter. Of course, what first chapters are, really? The most exciting part of this chapter is, of courssse, the introduction of the Cullens and Bio Class. The only other thing that happens in this chapter is we meet some other characters (boring humans, blah) and Bella goes to school. Just like Curious George. Didnt he go to school? I have no clue, I only ever read the puzzle piece swallowing episode. Haha, anyway, back to Twilight.

Thoughts: -The very first paragraph is about the weather being nice in Phoenix and that Bella’s “carry-on item was a parka.” No novel starts with a paragraph about the weather unless the weather is going to be important. Obviously, with this book it is. Stephenie mentions the weather many, many times in the first chapter. Foreshadowing? I think so.
-We get a very good idea about Charlie’s love for Bella in the first chapter when he buys her the car. It’s all awkward and adorable.
-This introduction to Jessica makes me dislike her a lot. The whole lunchroom scene when she is talking to Bella about the Cullens is very… unflattering to her. “…I got the impression that [Jessica] didn’t like the doctor and his wife for some reason. With the glances she was throwing at their adopted children, I would presume the reason was jealousy.”; “…she said in a voice that implied it should be obvious, even to a new arrival like me.” Some people like Jessica later (not me personally, never been a fan), but with this exposition of her, makes me think that Stephenie doesn’t like her. Thoughts, Twilighters?

Play by Play

Memorable Quotes
The memorable quotes for this chapter kinda suck, but….

“How could I leave my loving, erratic, harebrained mother to fend for herself? Of course she had Phil now, so the bills would probably get paid, there would be food in the refrigerator, gas in her car, and someone to call when she got lost, but still….”– This little paragraph just gives us a really good idea of Renee’s character. We never really see her enough to get this out of her actions or quotes, so I’m glad we have this funny little paragraph.

“I didn’t relate well to people my age.”– I just find this sentence hilariously ironic. There are so many little things like this that you notice once you read it knowing about the vampires and such.

“…I was watching him surreptitiously. Just as I passed, he suddenly went rigid in his seat. He stared at me again, meeting my eyes with the strangest expression on his face- it was hostile, furious. I looked away quickly, shocked, going red again. I stumbled over a book in the walkway and had to catch myself on the edge of the table. The girl sitting there giggled. I’d noticed that his eyes were black- coal black.”– This is just a really great paragraph. It’s pretty perfect. ‘Nuff said.

“It couldn’t have anything to do with me. He didn’t know me from Eve.”– Who talks like this? Seriously? What 17-year-old girl talks like that? Maybe this has to do with the fact that Bella isn’t like other 17-year-old girls and doesn’t relate to 17-year-old girls.

“So, did you stab Edward Cullen with a pencil or what? I’ve never seen him act like that.”– I see that first sentence on a lot of avatars. I guess it’s funny, but there are definitely funnier ones. Favorite Mike quote, perhaps? Any big Mike fans out there?

Fictional Characters

•April 13, 2008 • Leave a Comment

So me and my friend were talking about this I while ago and I just mentioned it to Thirst for Twilight and she thinks I should blog about it. So here it is.

I think I have a thing about disliking (even if its only sometimes) the protagonists of books that I love. Harry Potter? Harry bugs me. Twilight? Bella bugs me sometimes. Uglies? I kinda hate Tally, though I guess, later on, it’s understandable (If you havent read the series, just ignore that comment).

Harry Potter
Harry is so angsty during OOTP. He’s screaming at Ron and Hermione, pissed at Dumbledore, getting his hand cut up, wah wah wah. Poor Harry, his life sucks so much. I just wanted him to get over it!!!  I really pissed me off when he was mad at Ron and Hermione. Don’t get mad at your best friends, Harry!!  And I understand that like, the wizarding world hates him and such, but seriously, you’re tougher than that, Harry!!!  But the thing that made me even madder was when, right before they left Hogwarts for the Ministry of Magic, he was in Umbridge’s office and Snape came in. Direct quote:

Harry knew his last chance of letting the Order know what was going on was walking out of the door.
“He’s got Padfoot!” he shouted. “He’s got Padfoot as the place where it’s hidden!”
Snape had stopped with his hand on Umbridge’s door handle.
“Padfoot?” cried Professor Umbridge, looking eagerly from Harry to Snape. “What is Padfoot? Where what is hidden? What does he mean, Snape?”
Snape looked around at Harry. His face was inscrutable. Harry could not tell whether he had understood or not, but he did not dare speak more plainly in front of Umbridge.
“I have no idea,” said Snape coldly. “Potter, when I want nonsense shouted at me I shall give you a Babbling Beverage. And Crabbe, losen your hold a little, if Longbottom suffocates it will mean a lot of tedious paperwork, and I am afraid I shall have to mention it on your reference if ever you apply for a job.”
He closed the door behind him with a snap, leaving Harry in a state of worse turmoil than before: Snape had been his very last hope.
-U.S Paperback Edition, Pg. 745+746

Now, honestly Harry. What did you expect Snape to say? “Oh, right Harry, I got it. Sirius is in the Department of Mysteries!! I’ll just head right over to Number Twelve Grimauld Place and tell the Order about this!! Don’t worry your pretty, little, black-haired head!” … Seriously. That just bugged me a lot. But I honestly like Ron a lot more than Harry. Poor Ron, he always got shoved to the side. I LOVE YOU RON!!!

Bella Swan
Oh Bella. So when I read the books, I find myself thinking that I might not like Bella very much if she were real. But the thing that annoys me most about her is how… slow? That sounds mean. Well, how slow and unnecessarily worried she is sometimes.

“What are you going to tell her?” Edward murmured.
“Hey, I thought you couldn’t read my mind!” I hissed.
“I can’t,” he said, startled. Then understanding brightened his eyes. “However, I can read hers. She’ll be waiting to ambush you in class.”

Twilight. U.S. Paperback. Pg. 200. Chapter 10, Interrogations.

I always thought that part was really annoying. Isn’t it obvious? I always shake my head when I read that part. I might be exaggerating, but I just find it very slow of Bella.

“Good morning,” he chuckled.
“What’s wrong?” I glanced down to make sure I hadn’t forgotten anything important, like shoes, or pants.
“We match.” He laughed again. I realized he had a long, light tan sweater on, with a white collar, showing underneath, and blue jeans. I laughed with him, hiding a secret twinge of regret — why did he have to look like a runway model when I couldn’t?
-Twilight. U.S. Paperback. Pg. 253. Chapter 12, Balancing.

Bella bugs me a lot when she mentions Edward’s looks. She’s always lamenting about how he’s so much better looking than she is, and how could Edward possibly love her! Well, Bella, he’s a mythical creature! I would expect that he would look better than you. Sorry. It also really bugs me when she gets jealous, ex. Rosalie and the Denali girls.

Then, pretty much the whole end bugs me. Bella decides to not tell Jasper or Alice about the phone call from James and to just go save her mom, or die trying. That annoyed me. If I were Bella, I would have told Jasper and Alice. Let the vampires handle it!! But no, she ran to meet James. I gotta give her props on how she escaped though. Good for her. And then, she tells Edward (via note) not to get revenge on James!! Because she doesn’t want him, or anyone else, to get hurt!! I’ve never understood Bella’s irrational fear that the Cullens can’t take care of themselves. I think a huge, strong clan of vampires could handle James! Which leads me into my next point…..

Eclipse. Eclipse is annoying. See below.

Both fights were too close. Seth was about to lose his, and I had no idea if Edward was winning or losing. They needed help. A distraction. Something to give them an edge.
My hand gripped the stone spike so tightly that a support in the brace snapped.
Was I strong enough? Was I brave enough? How hard could I shove the rough stone into my body? Would this buy Seth enough time to get back on his feet? Would he heal fast enough for my sacrifice to do him any good?
I raked the point of the shard up my arm, yanking my thick sweater back to expose the skin, and then pressed the sharp tip to the crease at my elbow. I already had a long scar there from my last birthday. That night, my flowing blood had been enough to catch every vampire’s attention, to freeze them all in place for an instant. I prayed it would work that way again. I steeled myself and sucked in one deep breath.
Victoria was distracted by the sound of my gasp. Her eyes, holding still for one tiny portion of a second, met mine. Fury and curiosity mingled strangely in her expression.
I wasn’t sure how I heard the low sound with all the other noises echoing off the stone wall and hammering inside my head. My own heartbeat should have been enough to drown it out. But, in the split second that I stared into Victoria’s eyes, I thought I heard a familiar, exasperated sigh.
-Eclipse. U.S. Hardcover. Pg. 550. Chapter 24, Snap Decisions.

That really bugged me too. They can handle themselves, Bella! Edward is a vampire who is very skilled at fighting, and Seth is a werewolf. Sure, he’s young, but he definitely knows more about fighting than Bella. That’s one of those traits that I just don’t understand about Bella. She’s got this weird, irrational fear that these strong creatures will get hurt. I just don’t get it!!

Well I think that’s it. Thanks for reading!! I’ll prolly start the chapter discussions tomorrow. Comment?

My Thoughts on the MTV Interview

•April 13, 2008 • Leave a Comment

This video was, no joke, the most exciting thing I’ve seen in a longg time. I was flipping. Out. And it was like midnight so I’m trying really hard not to scream and I end up jumping up and down. The movie looks reallly fantastic.

Rob: Rob looked adorable!!! Ahaha. Like when he was laughing at the end!!

Kellan: I love Kellan a lot. He looks awesome in his outfit and hat. He’s so cute!!!

The Meadow: Is it just me, or are they lying really close to each other? A lot closer than in the book. Bella never even lay down next to him in the book. But I’m excited for this scene. Rob is so gorgeous haha.

The Garage: That scene looks reaaaaalllly cool. All them walking around the garage, being awesome and looking amazing. Peter looked really cool!! I don’t know why, but I’m really excited for that scene. Haha. And I really like Rosalie’s outfit. Very cute!!!!

Alice and Jasper: Jasper had really funny glasses on. But they looked really cute together and they were hilarious at the end. “Oh we would totally kick ass.” “I dont know, they’ve got brooms.” That was awesome. And she’s all curled up in her chair. So Alice like!! Jasper’s hair is still really big, but I like it.

“I cant watch you guys do this, this is insane!”- Bella says this during the car scene. I think this quote is kinda weird. I’m not quite sure what she’s talking about. People have told me that she’s referring to them going after James, but I dont really get it.

“I’ll tear him apart and burn up the pieces.”- You can hear Emmett say this in the background and then I think Jasper says “Yeah.” He just sounds totally cool. Kellan is awesome.

“Emmett’s there to do. He’s the brute force. He’s there to crack jokes and then there to beat someone up.”- Said by Kellan. Awesome. Awesome. That is so true, Kellan. He really is the perfect Emmett. He’s cute and funny and he’ll beat you up!!

“Robert dazzles me.” “It’s all on purpose. I can just decide when to.”- Cutest, funniest moment ever. Gotta love the Bella/Edward there.

“I dont know, they’ve got brooms.”- Hilarious. I laugh out loud at this part ever time I watch the video. Jackson is awesome.

“No fangs allowed. You know. These are beautiful, super sexy vampires. They’re strong enough and powerful enough that they can kill you any way.”- Said by Catherine. She is awesome, man. I feel like she totally understands the books. I’m really glad she’s the director.

“It’s, like, essential growing up story. I mean, it’s about gaining confidence as a human being.”- Rob says this about the similiarities of Harry Potter and Twilight. Gaining confidence as a human? Does he mean Bella? I’m not quite sure what he’s referring to here.

“They’re both fantasies. But they’re different ones… They’re both money makers.”
-Kristen says this about the similiarites of HP and Twilight. So Rob says this super philosophical like thing up above ^ and then Kristen says this totally random, stuttered thing about money. Ok. Good one, Kristen. Yeah, they’re different. We know haha.

Basically I’m loving this interview. And I cant stop watching it. This movie is going to be amazing. Ahhhh!!!!!
